Design of a Low-Loss, Low-Cost Rolling Element Bearing System for a 5 kWh/100 kW Flywheel Energy Storage System

The bearings of a flywheel energy storage system (FESS) are critical machine elements, as they determine several important properties such self-discharge, service life, maintenance intervals and most importantly cost. This paper describes the design low-cost, low-loss bearing for 5 kWh/100 kW FESS based on analytical, numerical experimental methods. special operating conditions rotor (e.g., high rotational speeds, mass, vacuum) do not allow isolated consideration alone, but require systematic approach, taking into account aspects dynamics, thermal management, loads lubrication. proposed incorporates measures to mitigate both axial radial loads, by deploying resilient seats lifting magnet weight compensation. As consequence minimized external loading, kinematics also need be considered during process. A generally valid, well-structured guideline rolling systems is presented applied use case.
